Jacked In Reviews ‘Sid’ (2023)

A tale that was just waiting to be told, Shahzaib Yaqoob’s short brings us a dark re-imagining, showing the aftermath of Toy Story (1) and the knock-on effect it had on the movie’s antagonist, Sid (Tom Moore).

The short is addressed with such serious severity – with no one cracking a smile throughout – it makes this horror all the more darkly comedic.

The clever concept definitely has legs with the ex-toy torturer who is now in therapy – after the traumatic experience he suffered at the hands of Woody, Buzz and the other sentient dolls out for revenge. Given that the short is addressed with such serious severity – with no one cracking a smile throughout – it makes this horror all the more darkly comedic.

Although the stretch to make Moore’s British accent work didn’t have too much of an impact on the story, there was still something to be desired in his performance that didn’t necessarily embody the characteristics of his younger (Pixar) self. Superb acting from Danni Shepard, who – although British – gives a brilliant Americanised performance (which begs more questions as to why they went the English route with Sid).

Thankfully, the downfalls are minor and take nothing away from the overall enjoyment.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
