Jacked In Reviews ‘Wicked Little Letters’ (2024)

Thea Sharrock’s Wicked Little Letters, a movie that is British from head to toe, so what better place to experience it, than in the establishment that champions the sub-genre… Tyneside Cinema.

Showcasing actual events, “this story that is more real than you think”. Set in 1920s Sussex, in the town of Littlehampton, we follow the well-to-do Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and her authoritarian father, Edward Swan (Timothy Spall). And it seems Edith has been receiving some abusive letters as of late.

Jacked In Reviews ‘The Iron Claw’ (2023)

The pillars surrounding the screen at Tyneside Cinema provides the perfect opening, as a black and white man comes into focus, (seemingly) pummelling someone within an inch of their life inside the wrestling ring – before using his signature move, The Iron Claw. However, the intensity in the fighter’s eyes isn’t that of passion for the craft… but an obsession.

Jacked In Reviews ‘Poor Things’ (2023)

As we settle into our red velvet seats at Tyneside Cinema, it becomes clear that their gorgeously old-fashioned, classic screen is the perfect vessel to experience this Victorian masterpiece. Based on Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel of the same name (well, partly, the full title is, in fact, Poor Things: Episodes From The Early Life Of Archibald McCandless M.D., Scottish Public Health Officer – a very apt title for the beautifully bizarre world in which this story lives), partnering once again, we have Acadamy Award Nominee and BAFTA-winning screenwriter, Tony McNamara (The Favourite & The Great) and Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Yorgos Lanthimos’ (The Lobster, Killing of the Sacred Deer & The Favourite) adaptation.

Jacked In Reviews ‘Dream Scenario’ (2023)

We recently paid a visit to Tyneside Cinema’s Gallery screen. The intimate space and alternative setting provided a very apt experience for Kristoffer Borgli’s dark comedy, Dream Scenario.

We follow Paul Matthews (Nicolas Cage), an average Joe (in every sense of the word) who all of sudden, inexplicably starts turning up in people’s dreams. Having no bearing on the content of the dreams themselves (or the outcome for that matter), Paul simply shows up as an unintrusive voyeur (hilariously not helping, even if the dreamer is in distress or danger).

Jacked In Reviews ‘Script in Progress’ (2023)

Bruno Guillard’s Script in Progress aka En cours d’écriture sees a documentary crew following creative filmmaker, Romain – post a traumatic point in his life. Romain is aided by two friends who journey to Madagasgar with him in order to create his vision. The only problem is, it isn’t clear what that vision is!

Jacked In Reviews ‘The Defender’ (2023)

Gary J Hewitt’s The Defender pretty much delivers what it promises on the tin. This is a story we’ve seen time and time again. If someone described a movie about a vigilante with a troubled past, taking the law into their own hands, already your mind is swarming with titles.
