Bruno Guillard’s Script in Progress aka En cours d’écriture sees a documentary crew following creative filmmaker, Romain – post a traumatic point in his life. Romain is aided by two friends who journey to Madagasgar with him in order to create his vision. The only problem is, it isn’t clear what that vision is!
The pacing is always moving forward (after all, time is money!) which keeps you engaged throughout. It sends a powerful message about what people are willing to do to help out a friend, by bringing an artist’s vision to light or in this case with Romain, what is (clearly) a concept at best.
Not only is this entertaining for those within the industry – who might even be able to empathise – but it also provides an insight to those who aren’t aware of the shambolic side of the business and the struggles one can encounter when trying to get an idea off the ground. Even though the project seems disastrous from the get-go, the brief sneak peeks of Romain’s film – as well as the brilliant soundtrack by Bangkok – invite a feeling of optimism.
There’s a subtle humour throughout in this comedy of errors doc which almost makes you question is this is just a genius mockumentary?
There’s a subtle humour throughout in this comedy of errors doc, which almost makes you question is this just a genius mockumentary? (with the realistic calibre of this genre being at its highest in France with films like Man Bites Dog, it wouldn’t be a surprise). However, it’s fair to say the ending truly encompasses the documentary as a whole and will cement your opinion as to whether this is a doc or a mock!
