Based on the novel by Elena Ferrante, The Lost Daughter tells the tale of Leda (Olivia Colman), a middle-aged, divorcee, enjoying a solo getaway in Greece.
After a small incident involving a young child – and a hostile family who continues to make her feel unsettled – Leda begins to slowly slide off to the deep end as the memories of her past and the questionable decisions she made as a parent come back to haunt her. Colman is fantastic as ever, along with a brilliant, intermate cast and a vulnerable yet intimidating performance from Dakota Johnson as Nina.
All in all, a pleasantly paced drama that shows more than it tells. Maggie Gyllenhaal does a wonderful job presenting this story about a woman’s rediscovery of herself and the more stressful sides to parenting that isn’t often shown on screen, get involved.
