Jacked In Reviews ‘Breadwinner’ (2023)

Set in England, Oscar Bell’s Breadwinner presents an empathetic story during a time when the cost of living crisis has swept the country.

The strong subject matter, brilliant cinematography and beautiful use of visual metaphors lure you into the financial dismay of these characters.

We get to see how “little” problems can become big, the knock-on effect they have and what impact this can have on a family dynamic. The dialogue is a bit rusty, but the strong subject matter, brilliant cinematography and beautiful use of visual metaphors lure you into the financial dismay of these characters.

It doesn’t necessarily have a happy conclusion or end with the problem solved but instead exhibits power in unity as the characters try their best to “get on with it”, a tale more common than people realise. For that reason, the film nails realism, giving us a story that definitely needs to be told in the current climate.
