With a quirky opening – reminiscent of shows such as Bewitched (or Betty Boop in this case) – the tone is set for the entertaining and animated performance of our leading lady (and writer) Laura Jayne Marklew.
We then follow Millie (Marklew) as she goes about her day-to-day duties as a cleaner… and the variety of characters she encounters in the process.
With her theatrical and expressive face, it could be argued that Marklew would still succeed in communicating each situation if watched on mute.
With her theatrical and expressive face, it could be argued that Marklew would still succeed in communicating each situation if watched on mute. This also means there may not necessarily have been the need for as much dialogue as, at times, it felt like a belt and braces sort of affair.
The first episode of this bubbly sitcom is made up of two main stories, which are strong enough in their own right but the non-linear structure, unfortunately, doesn’t tie things together satisfactorily. The performances from the supporting artists in the first half were something to be desired, however, what the first half dropped, the second half picks up. With moments of adorability – and what feels like genuine comradely – the chemistry between Millie and Harry (Rob Leach) definitely puts you at ease.
