Đorđije Petrović’s Mammoth sees Nebojša (Vahid Džanković) pay a visit to the countryside with his wife and son – to celebrate his mother’s birthday. However, after his recent love affair, the trip is less than idyllic.
The bland colour palette encompasses the despair perfectly.
The bland colour palette encompasses the despair perfectly. This is accompanied by constant extended scenes of miserable faces that, in turn, make you depressed just looking at them. However, the mood of this movie is summed up perfectly with one shot in particular, a sad middle-aged man standing outside in nothing but his tight underwear and sandals, bearing his pot belly to the world.
It’s not so much plot-driven as an interesting insight into human behaviour. More astutely, family behaviour. Here we have a bunch of individuals at different stages of their lives, clearly not each other’s biggest fans, but they send the very strong message that you’ve got to make the best of what you’ve got. After all, misery loves company.
