We open on a young girl surrounded by (a foreshadowing) darkness but before we have time to start feeling worried, colour sweeps the screen in a Wizard of Oz-esque fashion.
Surrounded by fantastical creatures the girl strives to reach a unicorn at the top of the hill in this unknown land of wonder. This task proves difficult as she’s held back by a red “ribbon” that makes up part of her outfit.
The anime style of animation ropes you into the innocence of the story being told and definitely strengthens the severity of the finale. However, the ending shouldn’t be misconstrued as dark, more of a sadness – a sadness that also elevates the warmth of the fantasy segments.
A Magically, simplistic and heartfelt film, suitable for all ages but also manages to not shy away from real stories that need to be told in family features more often.
