Judd Apatow’s The King of Staten Island follows the life of local islander, Scott (Pete Davidson), a wannabe tattoo artist who spends most of his days smoking weed on his mother’s couch. Battling depression after the passing of his firefighter father, Scott tries his best to navigate his way through life.
And if things weren’t already bad enough, everything is turned upside down when a new fella (Bill Burr) comes into his mother’s life and Scott needs to grow up, fast.
The credit for most of the emotions this movie bestows on the viewer is owed to Davidson, whose actual firefighter father tragically lost his life on 9/11. Due to this, we get an elevated performance that feels so visceral and genuine.
Not to be confused with a typical stoner comedy, this drama certainly isn’t afraid to show the comedic side of tragedy but at the same time, the hardship that comes with it, get involved.
